A well-made crown can last many years, but the exact time depends on the material, the tooth, your bite, your oral hygiene and habits such as grinding your teeth. Regular check-ups help your dentist spot wear or problems early.
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia while it is being prepared, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some sensitivity for a few days afterwards is common, and your dentist will tell you how to manage it.
With a well-fitting bridge you can eat most foods normally, although very hard or sticky foods are best avoided. Dentures may feel different at first, so start with soft foods cut into small pieces and build up gradually.
It commonly takes some days to a few weeks to get used to new dentures, and small adjustments are often needed for comfort. Speak to your dentist if dentures rub, slip or cause sore spots, because they can usually be adjusted.
Brush your natural teeth twice a day, clean under a bridge with floss threaders or interdental brushes, and clean dentures every day with a soft brush and a denture cleaner rather than ordinary toothpaste. Your dentist can show you the right technique.
A complete denture replaces all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw, while a partial denture replaces only some missing teeth and clips onto the natural teeth that remain. Your dentist will recommend the one that suits the number of teeth you have left.
