Pediatric and preventive dentistry at Dental Planet is led by Dr. Khushboo Barjatya Vatsal (MDS), who completed her MDS in Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry in 2011. She is a life member of the Indian Society of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry and the South Asian Society of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, and a Professor at Sri Aurobindo College of Dentistry. You can read more on her profile page.
Her approach is gentle care that helps children feel comfortable from their very first visit, alongside the wider team led with Dr. Ankur Vatsal (MDS). Our clinic in Indore has served families since 2012.
Dentists generally recommend a first visit by your child's first birthday, or soon after the first tooth appears. An early visit is short and gentle. It lets the dentist check how the teeth and jaws are developing, talk to you about feeding, brushing and habits, and help your child get used to the clinic before any problem arises.
Prevention is the heart of pediatric dentistry, and most of it happens at home.
Stay calm, and call the clinic as soon as possible.
Children need a dentist who is patient, explains things simply and focuses on prevention. At Dental Planet, Dr. Khushboo Barjatya Vatsal (MDS) and Dr. Ankur Vatsal (MDS) plan care around your child, and explain the options to you before treatment begins. A pediatric dentist has completed postgraduate training focused on the teeth, gums and jaws of children, along with child development and ways of guiding a child's behaviour in the dental chair. Dr. Khushboo Barjatya Vatsal holds an MDS in Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry.
Yes. Baby teeth help your child chew, speak clearly and keep space for the adult teeth. Decay in a baby tooth can cause pain and infection, and losing a tooth too early can crowd the adult teeth, so cavities in baby teeth should be treated. Read about root canal treatment, which can also be needed for baby teeth.
Keep it short, simple and positive. Explain that the dentist will count and check the teeth, and avoid words such as pain, needle or hurt, or using the dentist as a threat. Choose a time when your child is rested and fed, and stay calm yourself, because children pick up on a parent's worries.
Most children benefit from a check-up about every six months. Children who get cavities easily, or who have special dental needs, may be advised to come more often. Your dentist will recommend the right gap for your child.
Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears. Under the age of three, use a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste, and from three to six years a pea-sized amount, and help your child spit rather than swallow. Ask your dentist about the fluoride strength that suits your child.
If it is a baby tooth, do not put it back, and see a dentist promptly. If it is a permanent tooth, pick it up by the crown, not the root, rinse it gently without scrubbing and, if possible, place it back in the socket or keep it in milk, then see a dentist immediately, ideally within an hour.
